Season so far: The Chargers lost 26-14 at home to both Arizona and Las Vegas, then lost 24-16 at Buffalo in Week 3 despite forcing five turnovers. AP noted that through three games the offense has more punts (10) and turnovers (six) than touchdowns. Los Angeles has scored 44 points and allowed 76.
Quarterback and key players: Justin Herbert is 52 of 88 for 627 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions (ESPN) in his first season with McDaniel. Omarion Hampton has 193 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Ladd McConkey leads the team with 183 receiving yards. Khalil Mack has two sacks, rookie S Genesis Smith had two interceptions in Buffalo, and Derwin James Jr. has 21 tackles.
This week: Harbaugh’s “be better” comment on Monday was a rare public critique of Herbert (ESPN). McConkey (foot) and James (hamstring, plus rest) were limited Friday and are questionable, and backup QB Trey Lance (groin) is also questionable.
Seattle Seahawks Preview
Season so far: Seattle beat New England 13-10 in the Super Bowl rematch after Sam Darnold was hurt on the opening drive, then won 31-7 at Arizona with its backup quarterback starting. In Week 3 the Seahawks lost 33-31 at Washington (AP). They have scored 75 points and allowed 50.
Quarterback and key players: Darnold returned in Week 3 and went 31 of 45 for 379 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions (ESPN). Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the NFL with 405 receiving yards and six touchdown catches; he and Jerry Rice (1989) are the only players with at least 120 receiving yards and a touchdown catch in each of their team’s first three games (AP). Leonard Williams has three sacks.
This week: Rookie RB Jadarian Price aggravated a chest injury in practice and was ruled out, and Macdonald said he is not sure how long Price will be sidelined (ESPN). Zach Charbonnet (ACL) is also out, leaving George Holani and the rest of the backfield. S Julian Love was a full participant Friday and is in line to return.
