Panthers vs Hurricanes Preview, Odds & Puck Line – September 29, 2026 (NHL Opening Night)

Our Florida Panthers vs Carolina Hurricanes preview covers the odds, puck line, total, puck drop time, TV channel and where to watch for NHL Opening Night on Tuesday, September 29, 2026. The Florida Panthers (40-38-4 in 2025-26) visit the Carolina Hurricanes (53-22-7) at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, N.C. Puck drop is 5:00 PM ET (5:00 PM local). TV: ESPN (U.S.).

Opening Night storyline: The Hurricanes raise their 2025-26 Stanley Cup championship banner before puck drop, the franchise’s second title and first since 2006. ESPN bills it as a matchup of the last three Stanley Cup champions (Florida won in 2024 and 2025), and NHL.com notes it is only the third time in the modern era that the two previous Cup winners meet in a mutual season opener. It is also Brady Tkachuk’s Panthers debut alongside brother Matthew, and the first game of the NHL’s new 84-game schedule. DraftKings lists Carolina at -130 on the moneyline with the total at 6.5.

Florida Panthers Preview: Last Season, Offseason & Goalies

2025-26 recap: Florida’s bid for a third straight Stanley Cup ended early. The Panthers went 40-38-4 (84 points), finished seventh in the Atlantic Division and missed the playoffs. Injuries did most of the damage. Captain Aleksander Barkov needed ACL and MCL surgery during training camp and missed the entire season, and Matthew Tkachuk sat out the first 47 games after offseason surgery (NHL.com).

Offseason moves: GM Bill Zito acquired Brady Tkachuk (22 goals, 59 points in 60 games) from Ottawa on June 21 for three first-round picks and a second-rounder. He also rebuilt the crease. Longtime No. 1 Sergei Bobrovsky signed with Toronto, so Jacob Markstrom came over from New Jersey and Akira Schmid from Vegas. Radko Gudas, Lars Eller, Alexander Petrovic and Garnet Hathaway add veteran depth. Evan Rodrigues, Jesper Boqvist, Mackie Samoskevich, A.J. Greer and backup goalie Daniil Tarasov are gone.

Key players & coach: With Barkov healthy again, NHL.com projects a top line of Brady Tkachuk, Barkov and Sam Reinhart, with Sam Bennett centering Matthew Tkachuk, who led Florida in points per game last season (34 points in 31 games). Gustav Forsling, Aaron Ekblad and Seth Jones anchor the blue line. Paul Maurice begins his fifth season behind the bench.

Goalies: Markstrom went 23-19-1 with a 3.07 GAA and .883 save percentage for New Jersey last season. Schmid went 16-10-6 with a 2.59 GAA and .893 save percentage for Vegas. Florida had not confirmed a starter at research time.

Injuries: Brad Marchand (lower body, injured reserve) will be out until at least November, per Maurice. Jonah Gadjovich (upper body) is also on IR. Brady Tkachuk is day-to-day after a preseason injury, but Maurice said he is expected to be ready for the opener (Panthers.com, Sportsnet).

Carolina Hurricanes Preview: Defending Champions

2025-26 recap: Carolina went 53-22-7 (113 points), won the Metropolitan Division and finished second in the NHL. The Hurricanes then went 16-3 in the playoffs and won the Stanley Cup with a 3-0 win over Vegas in Game 6 of the Final at T-Mobile Arena. Captain Jordan Staal won the Conn Smythe Trophy with eight goals and 12 points in 19 playoff games, six of those goals in the Final. At 37, he is the oldest playoff MVP in NHL history.

Offseason moves: It was a quiet summer. Goalie Frederik Andersen signed with Edmonton. Defenseman P.O Joseph signed a one-year deal and Mike Reilly re-signed on a two-way contract. Restricted free agent defenseman Alexander Nikishin is still unsigned, skipped training camp and has been the subject of trade talk (Sportsnet, TSN).

Key players & coach: Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, Logan Stankoven (a career-high 21 goals, then a team-leading 11 playoff goals), Taylor Hall, Jackson Blake and Nikolaj Ehlers lead the forwards. Jaccob Slavin, K’Andre Miller and Shayne Gostisbehere lead the defense. Rod Brind’Amour is in his ninth season as coach, and Carolina has made the playoffs every year of his tenure.

Goalies: Brandon Bussi went 31-6-2 with a 2.47 GAA in the regular season. He took over in the Final after Andersen was hurt, went 3-1 and posted the Cup-clinching shutout. Pyotr Kochetkov is back after lower-body surgery limited him to nine games last season.

Injuries: Forward Seth Jarvis is on injured reserve after June shoulder surgery (four to six months of recovery). Nikishin is listed as out due to his contract situation (ESPN).
