2025-26 recap: Carolina went 53-22-7 (113 points) and won the Metropolitan Division, then swept Ottawa and Philadelphia, beat Montreal in five games in the Eastern Conference Final and beat Vegas in six games for the Stanley Cup. Captain Jordan Staal won the Conn Smythe Trophy with eight goals in 19 playoff games (NHL.com). Sebastian Aho led the regular season with 80 points, Nikolaj Ehlers had 71, Andrei Svechnikov scored 31 goals and Logan Stankoven had 11 playoff goals.
Offseason moves: It was a quiet summer. Goalie Frederik Andersen signed with Edmonton, and defenseman P.O Joseph signed a one-year contract. Of the 22 players who dressed in the 2026 postseason, 20 remain with the team (NHL.com). Defenseman Alexander Nikishin (33 points as a rookie) is an unsigned restricted free agent, did not attend training camp and has reportedly asked for a trade (NHL.com).

Philadelphia Flyers Preview: Looking for a First Win
2025-26 recap: Philadelphia went 43-27-12 (98 points) and finished third in the Metropolitan, reaching the playoffs for the first time since 2020. The Flyers went 18-7-1 after the Olympic break, beat Pittsburgh in six games in the first round and were then swept by Carolina in the second round. They allowed 25.5 shots per game, fourth fewest in the NHL, but had the league’s worst power play at 15.7 percent (NHL.com).
Offseason moves: Nearly the whole roster is back. GM Daniel Briere acquired goalie Joseph Woll and defenseman Simon Benoit from Toronto for goalie Samuel Ersson, defenseman Emil Andrae and a third-round selection, and signed forward Noel Acciari away from Pittsburgh. Trevor Zegras (career-high 26 goals and 67 points) signed a four-year contract. Philadelphia also signed Anaheim’s Leo Carlsson to an offer sheet, which the Ducks matched.
