Title-game berth on line in Alabama-Clemson, Part 3
NEW ORLEANS — There seems to be no alternate route to a college football championship, especially when recent GPS history indicates the road to the title, with very few detours, runs directly through either Clemson or Alabama.
For the third consecutive year, Clemson (12-1 and ranked No. 1) will face Alabama (11-1 and ranked No. 4) in the College Football Playoff, this time in the semifinals played Monday in the Allstate Sugar Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The winner will play the winner of the No. 2 Oklahoma-No. 3 Georgia semifinal for the national championship on Jan. 8 in Atlanta.

Oklahoma takes aim at Georgia’s defense in Rose Bowl
LOS ANGELES — For No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 3 Georgia, the chance to etch their names into the rich history of the Rose Bowl Game in Monday’s 104th edition also marks a step toward a national championship.
The Rose Bowl, college football’s first postseason game, also hosted the first-ever College Football Playoff semifinal on Jan. 1, 2015. The playoff makes its return to Pasadena, Calif., pitting two programs with one appearance each in the long and illustrious history of the Granddaddy of Them All.
Oklahoma (12-1) earned its way into the semifinal with a Big 12 Conference championship — its third straight and 11th since 2000. The 2017 conference title also marked a successful debut for first-year head coach Lincoln Riley, who replaced Bob Stoops following a surprise retirement in June.

No. 10 Miami made a run at the College Football Playoff with the help of its ball-hawking defense and turnover margin, which ranks as one of the finest in the nation. No. 6 Wisconsin chased a playoff spot until a loss in the Big Ten title game, posting an 12-1 record despite a quarterback whose 15 interceptions were among the highest total in the country.
The Hurricanes and Badgers meet Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.

GLENDALE, Ariz. — The Fiesta Bowl matchup comes with a full dose of deja vu for both Penn State’s program and Washington’s coach.
No. 9 Penn State is returning to the area — if not the exact site — of one of its greatest bowl triumphs, the 14-10 victory over then-No. 1 Miami that brought the Nittany Lions their second consensus national championship after the 1986 season. They have won all six previous Fiesta Bowl appearances.
